What Socrates was doing, and Plato makes sure we know this, is a reaction against this throwing together of the Sophists and Socrates in the comedy, and making sure that the readers of Plato understand the difference between the Sophists and Socrates.
It is basic for philosophy that Socrates reacts against the Sophists, and Plato often makes him discuss with the Sophists visiting Athens, that Socrates contradicts the Sophists’ claims.

The early dialogues of Plato see Socrates unmasking self-declared specialism, which is just an outward appearance of specialism, and the discussion fails. The participants in the discussion agree that they didn’t reach the final answer.
