Yippee new academic year

Professor tells us to stay healthy I guess.

“You know where to find health if you need it” this is a strong start for the course

“Obviously have to focus on what the mind really is”

1. Some practicalities

Split into lectures and seminars. Seminars are with Agne (!).
Lectures are ex cathedra, mostly the professor talking so I need to shut the fuck up
Though he does say he doesn’t mind questions

3. A psychological safari

  • Experiences
  • Propositional attitudes
  • Mental actions

(intentionality)
(accessibility)
(observability)

Three main categories of what the mind does:

Intentionality

Basically Husserl

Accessibility

The access to what goes on in your mind. Viz. Freud i guess

Observability

mental states are observable in so far as you see mind in others (e.g. being in love, I guess?)

Experiences:

Moods don’t have the same intentionality that emotions do (i.e. I’m angry at something, but just generally anxious). Pain has a direct intentionality towards something.

Pain is not an intentional state. (though there is debate)

very accessible, somewhat observable, and rarely intentional.

Propositional attitudes:

dreaming, thinking, intuiting - all pertain to a proposition.
Highly intentional, somewhat observable and accessible

Mental Actions:

Highly accessible and intentional, not really observable
stuff like planning and decision-making.
