Metaphysiscs

We cannot use super time to account for normal time → infinite regress.

Movement of time = some change in events or things, not a change to time itself.

Rate of time = change in time / change in time = 1.

Therefore flow of time is a metaphor. Events occur or change in time.

Broad: Ordinary view of time: an event is in the future, moves into the present and then further and further away to the past.

This leads to a contradiction: an event is momentary but has a long history.

Prior resolves this contradiction by distinguishing two kinds of histories. Events both have and are history.

The moment of queen anne’s death has its own history.

Augustine comes to the conclusion that all that exists, exists in the present, and as such future and past exist somewhere in the present.
So the only way to answer if a long time is long is the present.

”Most of the problems about time and change arise from the fact that many expressions which look like nouns are concealed verbs, and many expressions which look like verbs are concealed conjunctions and adverbs.”

→ you can solve many philosophical problems by looking at grammar.

Augustine talks about the existence of everything in the present as regards to some secret place that we lack access to, whilst Prior argues that the past and future exist in grammar only.

”What looks like talk about events is really at bottom talk about things, and that what looks like talk about changes in events is really just slightly more complicated talk about things”.

General facts & individual facts.

General: a fact about a vague someone or something.

Individual: a fact about a certain, concrete ’someone’ or something.

Prior is fundamentally arguing that we are changing in time, time does not

change.

The project of Prior is deflationary project. In the description of change, what has

changed is actually the truth value of the prior statement. The idea of deflationary projects is to argue that certain metaphysical problems are not metaphysical but rather linguistic or logical.

Hume

All the object of reason are either relations of ideas or matters of fact.

Relations of ideas are things understandable by human reason alone.

Matters of fact are a posteriori, it is never certain that a matter of fact will follow.

A posteriori things can only be ’known’ through repetition, but we can never really be sure inductively what will follow a priori.

Cause = an object followed by another, and whose appearance always conveys the thought to that other.
Hume doesn’t believe in effect however.

Cause and effect relationships are nothing but a custom.

You got humed.

Connection between cause & effect is always an idea from the thing in itself.
