(Interesting cause I feel like when we read Heidegger in the reading group we just kinda get all of this stuff in one place, I hate Heidegger but he is kind of nice still)

Sense: the meaning contained in a term relating to some thing
In grasping a sense one is not certainly assured of a reference

Reference: the thing that is actually be related to
Ie. the object
Is related to truth value

eg. Morning star and Evening star have the same reference but not the same sense (Sinn) because they refer to the same object in the world, but carrying different place, time or other meanings with it.
However, the sense of a sign are to be distinguished from the associated idea about a sign.

Sign: “to the sign there corresponds a definite sense and to that in turn a definite reference, while to a given reference there does not belong only a single sign”

Proper name: eg. Aristotle is the proper name of “the man who studied under Plato and taught Alexander the Great”
proper definition given by Frege: “expresses its sense, stands for or designates its reference. By means of a sign we express its sense and designate its reference.”

Words, expressions and whole sentences.

The thought must be considered as the sense

Signs with only a sense are representations.

“It is the striving for truth thtat drives us always to advance from the sense to the reference”

If the truth value of a sentence is its reference, then on the one hand all true sentences have the same reference and so, on the other hand, do all false sentences.
